CTSMD Announces New Interim Treasurer

9/9/2024

Children’s Theatre of Southern Maryland is thrilled to announce Eric Eitel as our interim treasurer.

Eric considers himself a theater kid through and through. From performing in high school productions and short films, to more recent forays into the professional stagehand world, he has been proud to watch this legacy continue with his daughters and their involvement with CTSMD since 2022. Most recently you may have seen Eric assisting with load-ins and load-outs, but he loves to help wherever he can best serve.

He has been working in the fields of insurance and financial services since 2015, and is currently the Financial Secretary of UAW Local 2503, the dealers union at MGM, National Harbor. He is excited to bring his experience in finance and his fondness for spreadsheets to support CTSMD as their interim treasurer and further their mission of growing our next generation of local talent.

Eric enjoys spending free time with his wife Anjelica, their daughters Jenny and Sean, and their kitty Dinah. They love watching performances and try to fit in as many trips to Disney World as is reasonably possible. His favorite musicals are Hamilton, Waitress, and The Wiz.

Many thanks to outgoing treasurer Brandy O’ Shields, one of CTSMD’s original founders, who has served in this capacity since the beginning of CTSMD. We appreciate your service!

ITS Meetings Start Soon

Calling all thespians! If you are homeschooled, go to a charter school or middle school, or your high school doesn’t have an ITS Troupe, we’ve got you covered! Miss Kristtany is at the helm this year for Call Time Crabs; the CTSMD International Thespian Society Troupe!

What is ITS? The International Thespian Society (ITS) is an honor society for high school and middle school students who excel in theater arts.

The society provides a platform for students to be recognized for their hard work and dedication to the performing arts, both on stage and behind the scenes. Membership in ITS is earned through participation in school theater programs, with points awarded for various activities, such as acting, directing, technical work, and theater management. Once a student has earned enough points, they are inducted as a Thespian, a title that signifies their commitment and achievement in theater.

ITS is part of the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA), which supports theater education and provides resources for both students and educators. Through ITS, students can participate in various events, such as theater festivals, competitions, and workshops, where they can hone their skills, connect with other theater enthusiasts, and gain exposure to professional opportunities in the performing arts.

BIG NEWS! We are excited to offer a new workshop in Commedia dell’Arte, a form of Italian theater that emerged in the 16th century and became popular throughout Europe. It is known for its improvisational style and the use of stock characters, each with distinct costumes, masks, and personalities. The performances were typically unscripted, with actors relying on a general plot outline and improvising the dialogue and action. The characters would find themselves in humorous, often exaggerated situations, leading to physical comedy and slapstick.
This class will introduce students to this classic form of theatre. They will learn what it is, learn some of the common stock characters in knowledge and practice, create their own masks, and run circuits or scenes with all these crazy characters and see how they interact with one another.

Students will be walking away from the workshop with:
  1. A firm basis of understanding of what Commedia is, where it came from, and a recognizable idea of the stock characters presented.
  2. The understanding that there’s power in the body! Your body is your instrument and your friend. Stop being in your head so much. Put it into the space!
  3. The basis of a Commedia mask of a character the student has interest in and can finish at home at a later time. A project to show their friends and family and a tool to use to become the character again if desired.

The Children's Theatre of Southern Maryland believes that theatre is for everyone, regardless of race, gender, ability, religion, or background. There is power in inclusion, and all of the students in our spaces deserve the chance to access theatre and to see themselves represented both onstage and backstage. CTSMD will not tolerate discrimination of any kind or situations that make our students, staff, and volunteers feel unsafe.
